Beginners Guide To Vaping
In recent years the rise of the electronic cigarette industry has been truly remarkable and here is why this has happened. Due to the thriving demand for a healthier alternative to smoking, electronic cigarettes, also known as “vaping“ has become the number one option for smokers, to live a healthier lifestyle and replace the regular smokes. Multiple other reasons such as the affordability, the convenience and the no smell factor also play a huge role in people making the change to electronic cigarettes. Just like myself, 3 years ago I decided to make the change to the healthier alternative as I was tired of how much I spent on regular cigarettes. Especially being on a students budget back then it was just not affordable. In addition to that, the constant state of feeling lethargic and sick was just doing my head in.
So what are E-Cigarettes?
E-Cigarettes are battery operated electrical devices, that are a healthier alternative in comparison to smoking regular cigarettes. It does not look like your traditional cigarette design or shape, but it does the job just like an ordinary cigarette. Essentially E-Cigarettes are a modernized alternative to your nicotine consumption also known as an Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS). The big question here is, WHY HAS IT BECOME SO POPULAR?
My Two Cents!
With people becoming more health-conscious has contributed greatly to the rise of the electronic cigarette industry. Essentially vaping is a healthier alternative for smokers to obtain their daily fix of nicotine, in essence making electronic cigarettes an electronic nicotine delivery system. So if we were to look at this phenomenon as a whole, we will be able to notice that people are making the switch to electronic cigarettes as they are still able to gain their fix of nicotine that they require without having to consume any of the other negative substances which come with smoking traditional combustible tobacco.
How It Works!
Simply put, in every E-Cigarette, there is an element inside the atomizer which stores your liquid, this is called a coil. The coil heats up when the power button is pressed and it evaporates the liquid in your tank, creating the vapour. This vapour contains your nicotine and delivers it to your body in order to satisfy your dependence towards nicotine. With all these pieces combined, all you have to do is push a button which heats the coil up in the atomizer, which vaporizes the liquid, and you just have to inhale on the mouthpiece and you are vaping. I will expand on this a bit more below.
Is It Safer Than Traditional Tobacco Smoking?
Whenever there are talks about smoking we all know that it is bad for our health and it is an extremely unhealthy and addictive habit to pick up. There have been debates about the credibility of E-Cigarettes from a health standpoint. Based on experience we have noticed that people who are addicted to general tobacco find it easier to give up their dependence to tobacco by using E-Cigarettes as an aid to get their nicotine fix. As mentioned earlier, this allows them to get their fix while eliminating the consumption of tar and tobacco, which are the most toxic substances which you get from a regular cigarette.
No doubt that the use of E-Cigarettes is new and there are still a lot of questions about the impact of it on one’s body that is yet to be answered. That is why the regulation on the industry is imperative to ensure that the public’s health is looked out for. Organizations like the Health Service Executives ( HSE ), Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ), Cancer Research UK, PHE and many more, are continuously conducting research and experiments in order to obtain a better understanding of the effects of e-cigarettes on the human body in comparison to regular tobacco.
A study by Cancer Research UK found that a group of people who switched to electronic cigarettes for 6 months, had lower toxic and chemical levels in their body, as compared to those who smoked traditional tobacco. They also found out, in order for this method to be effective, a complete change from the traditional cigarettes needed to be made, as opposed to gradually cutting down and then going on the electronic cigarettes. This also means that the user is less likely exposed to the harmful chemicals and toxins which are found in regular tobacco, which could lead to the development of cancer cells.
Beginners Need To Know About Vaping – WHAT IS VAPING?
Vaping has become a rather vaguely used term in the English Language and society. We very often see posts and stories regarding vaping or Electronic Cigarettes on the news, online, or even on the telly. But the question remains – ‘WHAT IS VAPING?’
Now that I have been vaping for 3 years I have found that vaping is not just a healthier replacement for smoking traditional tobacco. Vaping has created an industry which provided a lot of people with careers and job opportunities. Myself, being a prime example. Never did I think that I would end up working in the industry when I first started vaping, it was just a way of giving up smoking regular cigarettes. Life sure is full of surprises. Along the way, I have also met a lot of people and made a lot of friends.
So how does Vape Devices (Electronic Cigarettes) work? Here I will explain with an entry level device, the Aspire Pockex.

Most devices operate under the same mechanical concept which is rather easy to grasp. All an individual needs to do is fill their tank/atomiser. The tank is where the coil is placed.
The coil is the heating element made up of a piece of cotton wrapped in wire. The wire heats up and vaporises the liquid that the cotton absorbs and creates a vapour which is what an individual vape. A coil requires replacement after a certain amount of time – this time varies based on different types of liquids and different devices. Coils can last anywhere between 5-12 days, which can also be influenced by how intensely the vape is used.
Every time a new coil is placed in an atomizer/tank it needs to be left(primed) for 5-10 minutes to properly saturate the cotton which is inside the coil. This act of coil saturation helps prevent the instant burning of dry cotton, which if you have ever tasted you know what I mean. It’s NASTY! How can I explain the taste? Try to imagine eating dry sand from the Sahara deserts. Now multiply that taste by 100, that’s how burnt cotton tastes like.
Replacement coils are easily obtained in stores based on the popularity of the device you have purchased. Some devices may be less popular in comparison to others, which may lead to difficulties when trying to purchase coils for your device. Always check on the popularity of a certain device and brand before purchasing a new product as this may be a problem you may find yourself tangled in – in the future if you do not do so.
Moving forward the next step a user needs to ensure is that their device is charged. Depending on the battery size of your device getting a full charge could take anywhere between 1 hour – 4 hours. Ensuring your battery is charged every evening is crucial so that your day is not spent worrying about the charge you have available in your vape device.
Last but not least a user needs to ensure that they have sufficient liquid to get through their day or week. This is so that they do not put themselves in a position where they are craving for their nicotine fix and they do not have any liquids to vape.
Difference between Direct To Lung (DTL) & Mouth To Lung (MTL) Vaping.
When it comes to vaping there are essentially two different styles of vaping. You will commonly hear people talking about Direct To Lung(DTL) also known as (Sub-Ohming) or Mouth To Lung(MTL). These styles of vaping will differ based on each individual’s personal preferences, as vaping is a rather personal activity.
We will try to give you the most in-depth overlay of the pros and cons of each different style of vaping. First, we will briefly outline how both styles differ from each other.
Let us begin with Direct-to-lung vaping. As the name states, it is the act of inhaling the vapour directly into your lungs before you exhale it. This style of vaping is predominantly used by individuals who prefer to get more vapour, flavour and stronger hit off their vape.
On the other hand, you have mouth-to-lung devices. These devices produce much less vapour and are less powerful in comparison to the sub-ohm devices. In addition to that, these devices usually have a slightly more restrictive air-flow in comparison to a sub-ohm device. Generally, with these devices, you will inhale the vapour into your mouth first before you were to inhale it into your lungs. This style of vaping is very similar to smoking a regular cigarette. In many cases, users who use mouth lung devices will predominantly use a slightly higher nicotine strength in comparison to a user who uses a sub-ohm device.
Sub-Ohm (DTL)
Better Flavour
More Vapour
Stronger Hit
Predominantly Uses Lower Level Nicotine E-Liquid
Uses More Liquid
Requires More Battery
Typically Requires A Sightly Bulky Device
Mouth To Lung (MTL)
Less Liquid Usage
Less Vapour
Less Battery Usage
Very Discrete
Pocket-Friendly Devices
Smaller Battery Size (Due to the compact nature of the device)
Less Power Hit (Therefore requires higher level nicotines)
